Yet Another Daytime Theft From Gates

Featured Story

Bloomberg News cited internal company records to suggest that Phia’s founders, including Bill Gates’ daughter Phoebe Gates, were aware of a software function that falsely credited the company for sales that did not occur.

According to Bloomberg, founders Sophia Kianni and Bill Gates knew about the feature late last year. Back in July, when the problem was first reported, the corporation claimed to have found and fixed it the very same day.

By utilizing a browser plugin that actively seeks out deals, Phia allegedly assists customers in discovering the most affordable clothing and fashion accessories.

According to Bloomberg, Phia has the potential to earn a commission whenever a customer makes a purchase thru their platform. Bloomberg reports that the browser extension continued to credit the business for purchases made by customers who did not use Phia.

The tactic, which Phia claimed credit for 51% of in June, was described by Bloomberg as “cookie stuffing” — that is, inserting tracking cookies in a user’s browser to claim income for transactions an affiliate did not actually make.

After turning off the function, the company’s daily revenue plummeted from $80,000 to $10,000 to $28,000, according to internal statistics seen by Bloomberg.

“Any features causing misattributions were immediately removed over a month ago on July 7,” a spokesperson for Phia stated. “We are reviewing every transaction, we are fully committed to and have already begun issuing all transaction reversals to brand partners as a result of any misattribution, and we are hiring a head of compliance to make sure something like this never happens again,” he said.

“We will learn from this and want to ensure our users have the best possible shopping experience with features like our new digital closet and more to come,” the representative added, assuring that Phia would continue to operate.

The “enable coupon auto drop” function was seen in internal documents obtained by Bloomberg and could be toggled by Phia.

Activated on December 10, the function stayed on until last month’s original story by Bloomberg.

Bloomberg claims that Gates knew about the automatic cookie insertion because of messages in Slack. Bloomberg was informed by two sources at Phia that Gates wanted to make sure that the monitoring cookie was being inserted automatically whenever the coupon box showed up, regardless of whether the customer clicked on the coupon or not.

According to Bloomberg, Phia has started refunding commissions after raising $35 million in January.
