US Must Meet All Demands For The Hormuz Opening As Iran’s Military Command Reshuffles In Preparation For A “Hardline” Confrontation

Iran Sours Pakistan’s Hopes for Diplomatic Relations

Early in the day, Pakistan spread hopeful rumors that the warring parties were returning to “moving toward peace efforts.” However, it seems like those rumors didn’t last long, or were never really true. A senior Iranian official quickly followed up by reiterating that the Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until the US changes its “behavior.” As previously reported by state-run media outlets:

Rezaei, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary, has stated that the US must alter its conduct and accept Iran’s demands before the Strait of Hormuz can be opened.

Speculation has it that the ‘hardliner’ faction, which is opposed to inking a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Washington, has recently risen to prominence in Iran’s military, which would explain the recent leadership change.

The leader of Iran’s military has named six new generals:

Head of Staff: Ali Abdollahi• IRGC Commander Ahmad Vahidi
Deputy Chief of Staff: Kiumars Heydari
• IRGC Deputy Commander Mostafa Izadi
IRGC-Navy Commander Ali Ozmayi
By Arya Yadegaar (@AryJeayBackup) on August 10, 2026, Hossein Taeb was announced as the chief of Basij.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal and others, Tehran has made it clear that it is no longer interested in discussions and is instead preparing for a long-term military standoff. The article states: “Now, the new supreme leader, Khamenei’s son Mojtaba, is putting his own stamp on the country’s national-security policy amid a confrontation with the U.S. that could last months or even years.”

Based on additional analysis from WSJ:

Iran appointed long-serving hardliners to head the country’s security policy and repressive institutions in a massive shakeup of the upper echelons of government on Sunday and Monday.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who has been conspicuously absent from public view since the start of the war, oversaw the most substantial administrative reorganization during this time. Top Iranian cabinet officials claim they have never met him since he entered office, while U.S. intelligence services report that he is alive but badly wounded. He sustained injuries, but according to Iranian sources, he is doing fine.

Many saw the nominations as an indication of Khamenei’s will to stand firm in the face of pressure from President Trump, who is demanding compromises on Iran’s nuclear program and the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking for the anti-government group United Against Nuclear Iran, Kasra Aarabi said, “The regime is preparing for a more confrontational posture at home and abroad.” Aarabi specializes in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a formidable paramilitary force in Iran.

Some, particularly those who opposed intervention, saw this coming from the start of the war. “Return of Peace Efforts” Headline Drives Down Oil Prices

It appears that mediators are feeling optimistic again, and they have decided to spread another set of headlines indicating peace could return, even tho there are clearly continued attacks on international vessels in regional waters.

Despite the lack of proof, the Pakistani defense minister has hinted that the US and Iran are nearing an accord and that peace is on the horizon. The price of oil dropped precipitously just before the market opened. As part of ongoing mediation efforts, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, Pakistan’s interior minister, has reportedly just arrived in Tehran for discussions with Iranian officials.

The United States Attacks a Ship Trying to Evade Iran’s Sanctions

Although it is ironic that this occurred at the same time as reports of more major shipping incidents—including a fatal one—emerged in nearby waterways, the brief headline redux of “peace is near” may have achieved its desired effect on markets.

Warring parties are not ‘near’ to returning to deal-making; in fact, the ground reality is the exact reverse, as the US is obviously continuing executing its military blockade of Iranian ports.

As early as Tuesday morning, US Marines allegedly opened fire on a Panamanian ship that tried to circumvent the US embargo on Iranian ports, as reported by the Wall Street Journal citing an anonymous US official.

“A U.S. military helicopter fired at the rudder of the ship after its crew ignored warnings from American personnel working to enforce the naval blockade of Iran’s ports, the official said,” Wall Street Journal reports:
“As of this writing, no one has been hurt in the event that happened just before sunrise on Tuesday. According to the source, a U.S. official stated that following the attack, the ship seemed to be trying to transfer its crew to another civilian vessel.
Houthi Attack Kills Crew Members

The Houthis’ continued escalation against Saudi commerce coincided with a massive, deadly attack on a commercial ship off the coast of Yemen on Tuesday in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait region.

The internationally recognized government of Yemen has reported that a commercial ship in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait was attacked by Houthis, killing at least three persons; however, the Houthis have not yet confirmed this.

Reportedly, this is the first casualty count from Houthi marine attacks since the Iran conflict began in February, and the little vessel in question is the Tanzania-flagged Tihamah.

Reuters is reporting new information gleaned from maritime monitors, which states:

A cargo vessel off the coast of al-Mokha, Yemen, was hit by an unknown weapon, resulting in casualties, according to UK Maritime Trade Operations.

Maritime security firm based in the UK According to Ambrey, three crew members were killed when the ship was attacked and destroyed by the Houthis when it was at anchor 3.3 nautical miles northeast of Perim Island, Yemen.

According to Yemeni reports, the ship sank while sailing from Salalah in Oman via Djibouti, killing two Pakistanis and one Indonesian. According to their account, the crew was approached by the Yemeni coast guard after they lost control of the ship during the attack.

However, it does not seem that the capsized tanker is owned or operated by Saudi Arabia. This could mean that the Houthis are broadening their siege of the canal to encompass all foreign vessels, not just those with Saudi or Israeli ties.

A container ship and military troops were involved in an incident in the Gulf of Oman, according to UKMTO. This incident occurred further east.

Verification of this purported occurrence closer to the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz would strongly suggest a direct link to Iran. According to the WSJ, “maritime security firm Vanguard reported that a Panama-flagged containership called Vela Nova was struck by a missile fired from a helicopter while transiting westbound thru the Gulf of Oman about 71 nautical miles from the coast of Pakistan.”

The seventeen crew members were all reported to be safe after “the missile struck the vessel, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished,” according to Vanguard.

In their “siege for siege” operations against Saudi Arabia, the Houthis—long viewed as proxies of Tehran—have assaulted dozens of boats since joining the regional battle on Iran’s side.
In a Single Night’s Time

Amidst a battle with the U.S. that might last months or possibly years, Mojtaba, Iran’s next supreme leader and son of Khamenei, is putting his own mark on the country’s national-security policy. Iran appointed long-serving hardliners to head the country’s security policy and repressive institutions in a massive shakeup of the upper echelons of government on Sunday and Monday. According to the Wall Street Journal, energy companies in the Persian Gulf have come to the conclusion that Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place indefinitely, which will have a negative impact on their oil and gas exports as well as world energy supply. Their main concern is that returning to war would be an even worse alternative. WSJ According to Fars, a Saudi ship was allegedly attacked by the Yemeni army in a naval incident in Bab al-Mandab. Additionally, while the coast guard was rescuing the crew near Bab al-Mandab, Yemeni reports said that a second missile hit a ship.
A report has been received by the UKMTO regarding an incident in the Gulf of Oman involving military personnel and a tanker.
As reported by Fars News Agency, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi emphasized the importance of holding the US responsible for the Hormuz block and emphasized that the stability of the region necessitates a ceasefire in US aggression.
Al Arabiya reports that a military source in Yemen has stated that government forces attacked militia strongholds in Harib, Shabwa.
According to SNN, there have been explosions in Marib, Yemen.
According to Al-Arabiya, the next round of discussions between Israel and Lebanon is anticipated to take place in early September.
New strikes were carried out by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, as reported by SNN.
