Volatility in Wheat Futures Causes Worries Over the Black Sea Crisis and the Hormuz Chokepoint Project

As exports from one of the world’s most important breadbaskets are threatened by continuous attacks on Black Sea grain facilities and bulk carriers by Russia and Ukraine, Chicago wheat futures are bracing for a breakout, in one direction or another.

The Chicago wheat market, which is usually very lively, has been very volatile recently.

With a gain of 2.7%, hard red winter wheat reached $7.505/bushel.

Assuming prices remain over $7 per bushel, soft red winter wheat futures are set for a considerably bigger breakthrough.

On Monday, Bloomberg reported that due to continuing maritime security concerns in the vital transportation corridor, Turkey briefly halted transits of its cargo ships throughout the Black Sea over the weekend. Russian aggression, according to Ukraine’s warning, might cut its agricultural exports in half during the 2026–27 season.

According to Joe Davis, director of commodities at brokerage Futures International, US-grown hard red winter varieties have been given a significant boost due to concerns about potential supply disruptions. This is because these grains are perceived as direct competitors to higher-protein milling wheat from the Black Sea region and Europe.

“While the disruptions don’t necessarily translate into immediate additional US export business,” Davis continued, “they do tighten the global exportable supply outlook and balance sheets, forcing importers to diversify origins and keeping support under higher-quality wheat values.”

The United Nations’ index of global food prices reached a three-year high in July, which may ignite upward momentum due to rising wheat prices.

Food prices are likely to continue to fall due to upcoming disruptions in the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as unfavorable weather conditions in important US and other growing regions due to the increasing threats of El Niño.

The five factors that are pushing up food prices were detailed in a note last week by analysts at UBS (see the research here). They inquired about the future of affordable food, which is a crucial matter.

While the fire seems insignificant, it’s part of a much larger issue of a spate of “accidental fires,” one by one, taking out America’s food supply chain over the past year (source of the list via The Gateway Pundit):
