Protest Grok as Elon Musk’s Massive Sculpture Is Raised Over Times Square

Visitors and commuters alike were dwarfed earlier today in Times Square by a massive inflatable effigy of Elon Musk. Black banners say “Grok makes AI child porn” and “SpaceX owns Grok,” alluding to the AI chatbot owned by Musk that produced a deluge of sexualized images of children earlier this year. Masked attendants stood nearby, handing out fliers that included additional details, but they remained silent when approached by the reporters.

In the lead-up to SpaceX’s initial public offering (IPO) on Friday, the group known as Safe AI Now (SAIN) rallied “a coalition of faith leaders, family advocates, child development experts, educators, legal professionals, technologists, and concerned citizens” to stage a protest. Adjacent to the Nasdaq and Morgan Stanley, an initial public offering (IPO) banker.

At $135/share, SpaceX is the biggest company to ever go public, with a market value of $1.77 trillion. Shares can be purchased by the general public, but Musk will retain the majority of the voting power, granting him nearly total influence over the company’s actions. If the IPO goes through, he could become the first person to build a trillion dollars.

Times Square Unveils Massive Elon Musk Effigy to Demonstrate Grok

A SAIN representative spoke with WIRED, but asked to remain anonymous out of concern for Musk’s retribution. The representative claimed that the IPO’s investors and banks are ignoring the major danger that this structure presents to the company.

They assert that this initial public offering constitutes a transfer of liabilities. “Elon accomplished it everything. All the decisions were made by him. Shareholders are being made to pay for every investigation, regulatory sanction, and legal fee.

A request for comment was not responded to by SpaceX.

In February, Musk announced that his artificial intelligence business, xAI, developed by Grok, was being acquired by SpaceX. The declaration was made at a time when xAI was facing criticism both domestically and internationally for its creation of nude images of youngsters and women. An investigation into the company’s “assessment of risks and mitigation strategies” to prevent nonconsensual sexual imagery was announced in January by the European Commission.

In March, three females accused xAI of using its technology to create nudes of them, prompting them to launch a class action lawsuit. The 35 state attorneys general demanded in an open letter they signed in January that the firm erase all nonconsensual sexual imagery and implement safeguards to ensure it does not happen again. Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of Musk’s children, sued xAI for creating sexually explicit images of her.

According to a revelation in WIRED today, Grok features explicit sexualized photos of women, including celebrities like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that are hosted without their consent.

“Grok must win or we will be ruled by an insufferably woke and sanctimonious AI,” Musk warned in February on his own network, X.

Optimistic IPO news might easily divert attention. That is what the SAIN representative is hoping will happen. However, danger and harm can occur. An issue arises if explicit imagery is standardized across the board, from the banks that underwrite it to the NASDAQ that lists it to the stockholders who pay into it—a company with a poisonous platform like Grok.
After President Trump’s inauguration in 2025, some people stopped to take pictures of the billionaire’s tattoos, which included one reading “ketamine” and another showing his Nazi-like salute.

In front of the effigy, one man held his hands up in a pincer-like position for a picture op. He pretended not to care about Musk’s but was attempting to hold the artificial nipples of Musk when asked if he liked them.

“It is very bombastic on purpose to draw attention to this really important issue,” said the SAIN spokesman.
