More Meat Operations Shuttered by Tyson As Cow Supply Reaches 75-Year Low

Due to a persistent cow shortage that has caused U.S. supplies to drop to their lowest point in 75 years, Tyson Foods stated that it is closing more meat factories.
Affected plants in three states

About 2,500 employees will be impacted when the corporation closes its Joslin, Illinois, plant.

Additionally, it is closing its case-ready beef and pork operation in Eagle Mountain, Utah. Several years ago, Tyson announced the plant’s launch and stated that it will hire 800 people at first, with ambitions to grow to 1,200.

Additionally, Tyson will try to sell its Pasco, Washington, meat plant.
Lack of cattle puts pressure on Tyson

According to the firm, there aren’t many indications that ranchers are restoring their herds based on current statistics from the Agriculture Department.

According to a statement from Tyson, “recent USDA cattle inventory data, which included ongoing evidence of limited heifer retention, indicates these supply constraints are likely to persist, requiring strategic action.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, despite rising beef prices and sustained customer demand, Tyson’s beef segment reported a $142 million loss in the most recent quarter, and sales dropped 16% from the same period last year.

As previously reported by HNewsWire, the country’s cattle business has been negatively impacted by illness and drought in addition to growing expenses for diesel fuel, feed, fertilizer, and equipment. Despite rising prices at grocery stores and butcher shops, Americans have nevertheless continued to purchase beef.
Closures affect communities and workers

Workers were deeply affected by the news of the Joslin plant closure; this week, they received letters informing them that their last day would be either Thursday or Friday.

Illinois senators and Democratic Representative Eric Sorensen. About 2,500 jobs were lost, according to a joint statement from Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth.

Tyson stated earlier this month that it anticipates a $500 million to $650 million loss for its domestic beef division in the fiscal year 2026.

The congressmen wrote, “Today’s news is devastating for the 2,500 skilled union workers impacted by the closure of the Tyson plant in Joslin, especially at a time when American families are struggling with the rising cost of living.” “We continue to be dedicated to helping our union members through this transition and collaborating with Tyson to make sure they have access to resources that support their return to work in the upcoming weeks.”

The most recent closures come after Tyson shut down its sizable meatpacking facility in Lexington, Nebraska, at the beginning of the year, which resulted in the unemployment of over 2,000 workers. Lexington’s economy depended heavily on the plant, therefore its closure was devastating.

When combined, Tyson’s cuts this year represent a reduction of around one-third of its prior operations related to the processing of cattle.

Tyson stated on Thursday that it will focus its beef operations at three locations: Amarillo, Texas; Holcomb, Kansas; and Dakota City, Nebraska. There have already been staffing and shift reductions at the Amarillo site.

Tyson intends to resume operations at the Amarillo site.

Rebuilding the country’s cow herd will take time, possibly years, according to agriculture experts.
