ICE Officers Under Trump

When searching for migrants to deport, the new administration allows authorities to arrest anyone they find without proper documentation.

Because of Donald Trump’s second term and his efforts to stop illegal immigration, federal officers have a new sense of purpose because they know that “nobody gets a free pass anymore.”

Twelve Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers met early Monday morning in a parking lot in Maryland. They then spread out to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., to find their targets: a person wanted for murder in El Salvador, someone who had been convicted of armed robbery, a migrant who had been found guilty of having child sexual abuse materials, and someone who had been convicted of drug and gun crimes. None of them were legally in the country.

Matt Elliston, who runs ICE’s Baltimore field office, said that the agency’s enforcement goals are to go after the worst people first.

The cops talked to the Associated Press and showed how their jobs have changed since the White House decided to deport a lot of immigrants who were living in the U.S. illegally.

Elliston said that people who pose a threat to national security or public safety are still the most important thing.
What changed for ICE agents and what didn’t?

Though that is the same as under Biden, there is already a big difference: Under Trump, police can now arrest people who don’t have legal standing if they find them while they are looking for migrants who are going to be sent back to their home country. People could not be arrested in this way under Joe Biden.

“Those cases of public safety and national security are what we’re looking for.” The main difference is that now no one gets away with anything, Elliston said.He said that the number of unrelated charges has gone up and down. By the end of Monday, 13 people had been arrested by ICE in Maryland. Nine of them were targets, and the other four were people ICE met during the morning. In that group of “collaterals,” one had a conviction for aggravated theft. One person had already been sent away, and two others had final orders to leave the country.

Changes Trump made to how immigration is enforced

The administration talked about how other government agencies, like the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), were involved in immigration operations over the weekend. Emile Bove, who is acting as deputy attorney general, saw arrests happen in Chicago on Sunday. This shows that the Justice Department is becoming more involved. While ICE made an average of 311 arrests per day in the year ending September 30, that number stayed pretty steady in the first few days after Trump took office. On Sunday, it shot up to 956 arrests, and on Monday, it rose to 1,179. If they stay that high, it would be the highest daily rate since ICE started keeping track.

Trump has also lifted long-standing rules that said ICE couldn’t work in “sensitive locations” like hospitals, schools, or churches. Elliston said that ICE going into one of those places has happened very rarely. He said that in his 17 years on the job, he had only gone into a school once, to help stop a shooter. He said that getting rid of other rules that limited ICE’s ability to work in courthouses has made a bigger difference in the agency’s work.

In more subtle ways, though, getting rid of the policy on sensitive places does change ICE.At one point on Monday, the team stopped in a parking lot to try to catch a member of a Venezuelan gang who they thought was working as a delivery driver at a nearby business. The church across the street and the elementary school across the street would have made it illegal to park and do surveillance under the old rules.
Some rules about enforcement have not changed.

He said that the fact that these are targeted operations has not changed. Instead of going to every job or apartment building looking for people in the country illegally, ICE has a list of people they want to catch.

“I hate the word ‘raids’ because it makes people think we’re just randomly stopping people at their doors and telling them to show us their papers,” he said. “That couldn’t be more false.”Elliston said that since Trump took office a week ago, he has been on the phone all the time trying to put an end to rumors about what ICE is doing and who is being held.Elliston said that since starting his job in 2022, he has worked to build relationships with law enforcement and elected officials across Maryland. This is because many communities in Maryland have “sanctuary” policies that make it hard for them to work with federal immigration authorities.

Elliston has talked to places to let them know what ICE does and who their officers go after. He also tries to get to know city leaders so that they are more likely to tell the police when migrants who have been detained are going to be freed. ICE can then get them.Something else that hasn’t changed? They don’t always find someone when they look for them.Three ICE agents banged on the door of an apartment in Takoma Park, which is just outside of Washington, DC, asking the person who was inside to come to the door.

The police officer asked, “Miss, can you open up?” “Could you come to the door so we can talk?” We’ll have to keep coming back until this address is clear. A man who lived in the apartment finally came home and talked with the ICE. When they were looking for someone, that person probably gave police the wrong address because he didn’t live there.

Jones said that they keep looking for people if they can’t find them.It will always be a search for these guys, he said.
