Trump Pledged to Eliminate the National Debt During His First Term in Office. in Fact, He Achieved the Reverse Outcome. It Has Happened Time and Time Again Throughout His Second Term

Featured Story

Approximately eight years ago at this time, Donald Trump made an appearance on the radio show of Sean Hannity, during which he discussed the state of the nation’s finances. According to the president’s remarks made in July 2018, the country’s debt amounts to a “unthinkable” $21 trillion. “But it will be gone in no time.”

The remarks, like many of the Republican’s promises, now appear like a cruel joke.

With just two months left in the fiscal year, the American people were informed this week that the budget deficit for this year had surpassed last year’s total, reaching nearly $1.8 trillion. Trump deemed the $21 trillion U.S. national debt “unthinkable” when it reached that level, and now it has surpassed the $40 trillion mark, according to news reports circulating this week.

The general population should bear in mind a few points as they think about the consequences of this.

Everyone knew this was going to happen eventually, but according to this week’s Washington Post report, we’re amassing debt faster than earlier independent assessments. This is largely due to the cost of GOP tax cuts, the war in Iran, and the failed tariffs agenda of the White House. A dangerous time is upon us as debt accumulates at an alarming rate, the piece continued. Investors are fleeing government bonds due to a number of worries, such as inflation, the conflict in Iran, and increasing global debt levels.

People were promised a completely different result by Trump: The Republican campaigned in 2016 on the promise that he could end the deficit and begin paying down the debt thanks to his extensive knowledge of fiscal matters. In contrast, Trump contributed to a nearly $7.8 trillion increase to the national debt during his single term in office, the majority of which was accrued prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. He ran on a platform of keeping his earlier promises in 2024, but has done just the opposite: in the year and a half since his return to the White House, Trump has increased the national debt by about $4 trillion.

There is no huge secret here; Trump and the Republicans in Congress are to blame. The rapid increase in the national debt is a direct outcome of the Republican Party’s policies, such as the war in Iran and tax cuts for the rich last year.

It appears that neither Trump nor the Republicans in Congress care: Republican leaders have, for decades, made irrational claims about “fiscal responsibility” whenever a Democratic president has been in office. Actually, younger readers might have a hard time believing this, but Republicans used to rank the budget imbalance as the top national emergency. Officials from the Republican Party warned that the widening budget deficit would put our children and grandkids at risk of financial catastrophe, economic collapse, and national bankruptcy.
