To End the “Monopoly” of Beef Processors, Trump Has Issued an Order to Increase Animal Slaughter

President Donald Trump signed orders Friday afternoon in an effort to cut the nation’s stubbornly high meat costs, just before the start of a grilling-centric weekend. Ranchers have reduced their herd sizes to record lows, and the high prices aren’t helping their situation.

The president’s new order permits cattle producers to process, package, and sell their own beef across state lines, in response to the president’s statement that consumers and ranchers are being “overcharged” by monopolistic activities in the meat processing sector.

“A meatpacking monopoly has ripped off the livestock industry,” Trump remarked. They were being charged amounts that couldn’t be sustained.

The majority of the meat processing market in the United States is dominated by four American companies: Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and National Beef.

This order mandates that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) increase oversight and licencing for small beef processors, open up interstate sales of qualifying ranch goods, and encourage more people to join shipment cooperatives.

According to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, “this is the signal to our ranchers, the signal to rural America, but really the signal to the world, that American ranching and American farmers are back” (Friday’s statement).

The decision may improve ranchers’ ability to sell beef, but the farms will still be subject to industry-wide pressures.

In their scenario forecast report from August 18, the USDA stated that ranchers are experiencing a historically low rate of 25 billion fed-cattle slaughter each month. Producing the meat you see in the supermarket begins with fed cattle. We expect next year’s beef production to be flat.

Shed reductions have occurred as a result of increasing property prices, water scarcity, and the high cost of feed. Tyson recently let off thousands of workers after announcing the closure of processing operations in Utah and Illinois.

In his earlier statements, Trump had hinted at his intention to break up what he perceived as a monopoly by allowing additional processors.

We where informed by an industry association that customers will be put at danger by a widespread proliferation of small meat processors.

According to The Meat Institute, there are already several options for processing and selling the cattle that American farmers and ranchers produce, which may be used to accomplish the objectives set by the president, as indicated in late August. “The current system is flawed because it allows unsuspected meat to be sold to unaware customers, which jeopardizes our nation’s standing as a global leader in producing safe meat.”

The decree emphasizes that a revamped system for inspecting meat will precede any federal initiatives.
Beef labels from overseas

The directive also directs the USDA to investigate the labeling of imported products, which may result in more stringent disclosure standards. Some Republicans who had advocated for similar legislation welcomed the change.

According to Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., “It’s about time consumers get the transparency they deserve, and our producers get to compete on a level playing field.” This post was made to X by Lummis. “When ranchers are able to invest in providing consumers with premium beef, the government should invest in reducing red tape and getting out of the way.”
