America Is Next…

A new group of hundreds of migrants from Central America left southern Mexico on Tuesday. Some people are hoping that if the Democrats win the midterm elections in November, President Donald Trump will change how he enforces immigration laws.

“Caravan Without Borders,” the name of the group, left Tapachula, which is near the border between Mexico and Guatemala. It was made up of refugees looking for legal status in Mexico or ways to continue north toward the United States.

At first, the Mexican newspaper Milenio said that there were more than 400 people in the caravan. Later, Diario del Sur said that the number of people in the caravan had grown to about 700 since it left Tapachula.

Reports say that people from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, Venezuela, and Cuba are among the participants.

Julio Rosas, an independent journalist, talked to people in the group who said they hoped Democrats would win the upcoming midterm elections, which could mean a change in how the U.S. police the border.

Others, though, are said to plan to stay in Mexico, where they hope to get refugee status and the right to work and move all over the country.

People who joined the caravan said they had to because they were having a hard time financially, there weren’t many job opportunities, and the immigration process was taking too long.

Some of them were said to have been deported from the U.S. before and were now trying to get back to see their families.

The latest group of migrants comes after another one called “Fe y Esperanza,” which had about 600 people traveling through southern Mexico earlier this month.

In mid-October, Mexican immigration officials stopped that group near the border between Chiapas and Oaxaca. They eventually gave the people in the group travel documents that let them continue north.

In April, a different caravan tried to make a similar trip, but it broke up when Mexican police stepped in and sent many of the migrants back to southern Mexico.

Organized caravans are a problem for Mexican immigration officials because people journey together to stay safe and get their immigration applications processed faster.
